Work Visas
Japan offers a variety of work visa types, tailored to different job categories and needs. These visas can be divided into more than ten categories. Applicants must meet specific requirements when applying for a work visa. Below are the main conditions and classifications:
Application Requirements
Must be employed by a company recognized in Japan.
Japanese language proficiency at N4 level or above.
Holders of a "Specified Skilled Worker Type 2" (in construction, civil engineering, or shipbuilding) are exempt from the language test.
The visa must be renewed annually, with a maximum stay of five years.
Family members cannot accompany the visa holder.
Highly-Skilled Foreign Professionals Visa
Applicants must score at least 70 points under Japan’s points-based system to qualify. The visa is divided into Type 1 and Type 2. Eligible applicants initially receive a Type 1 visa with a five-year stay. After three years, they can transition to a Type 2 visa, granting indefinite residency.

Points-based system: A minimum of 70 points is required.
Educational Background: Master’s degree or higher (additional points for degrees obtained in Japan).
Work/Research Experience: At least three years (extra points for holding professional qualifications).
Annual Income: Varies based on age and visa category (A/B/C), with a minimum of 4 million yen.
Age: 39 years old or younger.
Japanese Language Proficiency: Must pass the N1 level test.
Permanent Residency: Scoring 80 points or above allows applicants to apply for permanent residency after three years.
Categories of Highly Skilled Professional Visa
Academic Research: Engaging in, supervising, or directing research projects.
Specialized/Technical Activities: Activities requiring specialized skills/knowledge in natural sciences or humanities.
Business and Management Activities: Directly managing or overseeing a company’s operations.
Business Manager Visa
Although Japan does not have a dedicated investment immigration program, this visa category is the only one involving investment. It is mainly designed for individuals planning to establish and run a business in Japan.
Application Requirements
Applicants must be 20 years or older.
Invest at least 5 million yen to establish a company.
Employ at least two full-time employees.
Applicants must have substantial control over the company’s management.
Spouses and children can apply for residency alongside the applicant.
Initial visa duration is one year, with renewal options of 1, 3, or 5 years, subject to meeting specific conditions.
