UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has announced that starting from 1st January 2025, the UK will fully implement the electronic visa (eVisa) system, replacing the current Biometric Residence Permit (BRP card) and other paper-based visa documents. This reform aims to simplify the visa management process and improve the efficiency of entry-exit procedures and identity verification.

What is the UK eVisa?

The electronic visa (eVisa) is a digital immigration identity certificate launched by the UK government, which records the holder's residence rights and entry-exit permissions. It functions equivalently to a digital version of the BRP card but can be accessed at any time through an online system without relying on physical documents.

4 Major Advantages of eVisa

  1. Convenience: There is no need to carry physical documents, and the visa status can be checked online at any time.

  2. Security: Data is stored using encryption technology, reducing the risks of loss, theft, or forgery.

  3. Efficiency: Border inspection processes are faster, saving time for both travelers and officials.

  4. Environmental friendliness and energy conservation: It reduces the printing and delivery of paper documents, in line with sustainable development goals.

How to Apply for eVisa?

Existing BRP card holders need to complete the conversion by 31st December 2024, with the following steps:

  1. Log into the system: Go to the eVisa application page on the official UK government website.

  2. Register an account: Create a personal UKVI account and bind existing visa information.

  3. Identity verification: Download the official application "UK Immigration: ID Check App" to complete biometric authentication.

  4. Confirm activation: After the application is approved, you will receive an email notification, and then you can use the eVisa.

Updating from the paper BRP to the electronic eVisa will not affect the validity period of your visa or the conditions for entering and exiting the UK. It is crucial to complete the eVisa update before it expires on 31st December 2024. Failure to complete the update by the deadline may result in obstacles during entry-exit or identity checks, so it is recommended to handle it as early as possible.
